Academic Requirements for Middle School Athletic Participation

To comply with certain changes in regulations governing athletics in North Carolina Public Schools by the State Board of Education, the following guidelines for the athletic eligibility became effective in the Wayne County Public Schools on July 1, 1998, for all athletes and cheerleaders.

In grades 7 and 8, the student must pass at least one less course than the number of required core courses each semester and meet promotion standards established by the LEA.

If an athlete is “academically eligible” or “academically ineligible” at the beginning of any semester, that status is retained throughout the full semester.  It is the responsibility of the school principal to check the academic status of each student/athlete enrolled in school at the beginning and close of a semester.  Promotion is defined as progressing to the next grade.

NOTE:  An athlete becomes eligible or ineligible on the first day of the new semester.

Students must pass at least one less than the total number of core classes, and at least two less than the total number of overall classes taken in a given semester in order to be eligible.  For example:

On the 90 minute block schedules (5 period day):  the core courses are Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  An athlete must pass 2 out of the 3 core subjects and 3 out of 5 total subjects each semester to be eligible for participation.

On the 8 period and A/B block schedules:  the core courses are Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.  An athlete must pass 3 out of the 4 core subjects and 6 out of 8 total subjects each semester to be eligible for participation. Some schools offer 6 periods because Math and Language Arts are taught on a 90 minute block.  An athlete should pass 3 out of 4 core subjects and 4 out of 6 total subjects each semester to be eligible for participation.
