 Philosophy of Teaching

I have a strong conviction of teaching and learning.  The opportunity to open up the minds and offer paths for students to travel independently and cooperatively in their learning experiences are embedded in the goals that I follow in my classroom.  My goals include creating a safe and productive learning environment that fosters creativity, risk-taking and curiosity.  Teaching and learning are inseparable.  As I work with students, the awareness that if learning is not taking place, teaching is not taking place is always in the forefront.  In my classroom most students find math to be challenging and with this premise I push each one individually and at the same time move the group concept to seek out conclusions and answers on their own.  It is important to me that students work through the problems, showing each step of their work,

It is very important to me for my philosophy of teaching to be more than words.  My goals as a teacher are demonstrated with my corresponding actions in the classroom.  As I plan weekly lessons, I contemplate on how to make the learning meaningful and relevant with the main focus on showing how knowledge and understanding can be transferred to real world situations.  As I present each lesson, I strive to create an environment that will allow my students to become engaged and excited about the current math lesson.  This excitement and enthusiasm will generate questions and make it easier to think critically.  They will search for connections and relevance in their own lives.
