Welcome to the 8th grade! Our goal for this year is to focus on science by incorporating activities that will strengthen each student’s knowledge and skills.  1st Nine Week:  Physical Science

 Matter: Properties and change

8.P.1 Understand the properties of matter and changes that occur when matter interacts in an open and closed container.

 Energy: Conservation and Transfer

8.P.2  Explain the environment implications associated with the various methods of obtaining, managing, and using resources.  Chapters: 8, 9

 2nd Nine Week:  Earth Science

 Earth History

8.E.2 Understand the history of Earth and its life forms based on evidence of change recorded in  fossil records and landforms. Chapters:  3, 4

Earth Systems, Structures and Processes

8.E.1 Understand the hydrosphere and the impact of humans on local systems and the effects of the  hydrosphere on humans.

Chapters:  5 – 8

 3rd Nine Week:  Life Science


8.L.3 Understand how organisms interact with and respond to the biotic and abiotic components of  their environment.

 Chapter:  9

 Structures and Functions of Living Organisms

8.L.1 Understand the hazards caused by agents of diseases that affect living organisms.

8.L.2 Understand how biotechnology is used to affect living organisms.

 Chapters: 16 – 20

 4th Nine Week:  Life Science

 Molecular Biology

8.L.5 Understand the composition of various substances as it relates to their ability to serve as a source of energy and building materials for growth and repair of organisms.

 Chapter:  14

 Evolution and Genetics

8.L.4 Understand the evolution of organisms and landforms based on evidence, theories and processes that impact the Earth over time.

 Chapter:  4

 ****Please Note that due to the complexity of some topics and the different learning styles of students, some topics may take longer than others****

 93-100    A

92-85        B

84-77        C

70-76        D

69 and below –Failing

 How grades are calculated:

Homework 15%

Class work 30%

Test 35% (Science Project)

Quizzes 20%

 Make Up Work

Students will be responsible for getting make up work from the teacher as soon as they return to school.  They have 1 week to complete their work.
